Property and purpose of SiC

       SiC (English name: Silicon carbide) is made from high-purity quartz sand and low-ash anthracite (or petroleum coke) through adding proper additives, high-temperature (about 2000℃) melting in a resistance furnace and cooling. Then, the appropriate granules are made after crushing, grading, reshaping, magnetic separation and sieving.

 According to the color, SiC can be classified into two series: black SiC and green SiC. 

        Industrial SiC was successfully researched and developed in 1891. It is the earliest manufactured abrasive. Although there is a little SiC in aerolite and earth crust, mineral resources which can be exploited are still nit discovered. 

       The hardness of SiC is between adamantine spar and diamond. Its mechanical strength is higher than that of adamantine spar. It is crispy and sharp. Black SiC has metallic luster. Due to different impurities and impurity content, SiC may present light yellow, green, blue and even black. The transparency is different with the purity. 

      SiC has good characteristics of high temperature resistance, anti-oxidation, good heat-conducting property, stable chemical properties, high heat conductivity coefficient, small coefficient of thermal expansion and favorable abrasion resistance. Except being used as the abrasive, it id also used as advanced refractory material and new application scope is expanding.  

       Fine micro-powder of SiC as a new compound functional material is the fourth generation of new materials for mechanical seal and one of main materials for new ceramic and composite materials after metal, alumina and hard alloy. It is widely applicable to engineering and pottery fields. In recent years, it has been widely applied in the fields of high-end solar energy, semiconductor cutting and grinding, LED, non-metal ceramics and high-property sealing ring. 

      Low-grade SiC (Sic content is about 85%) is very good steel-making deoxidizing agent. It can accelerate steel-making speed, promote control of chemical components and improve steel quality.
